A Perfect Weekend in Shaftesbury: A 48-Hour Itinerary
Shaftesbury is the ideal size for a weekend: small enough to feel relaxed, rich enough to keep you busy, and perfectly placed for some of the South West’s best days out. Here is how we would spend a perfect 48 hours.
Friday evening: arrive and settle in
Check in, then ease into the weekend with dinner in town. Shaftesbury punches well above its weight for food, so book ahead. Afterwards, walk up to Park Walk for the last of the light over the Blackmore Vale — a gentle, beautiful way to start your stay.
Saturday morning: Gold Hill and the abbey
Start early, before the day-trippers, with the walk down Gold Hill and back. Pause at the Gold Hill Museum at the top, then spend an hour in the peaceful ruins and garden of Shaftesbury Abbey, founded by King Alfred in 888 AD. Reward yourself with coffee and cake on the High Street.
Saturday afternoon: shops, galleries and a country walk
Browse the independent shops and galleries, then head out for a walk — the footpaths around the town drop quickly into classic Dorset countryside. If the weather turns, Shaftesbury Arts Centre usually has a film or exhibition on.
Saturday evening: a long dinner
This is the night to treat yourself. Whether you stay in town or drive out to a country inn, a slow dinner with local produce and a Dorset ale or two is the heart of a Shaftesbury weekend.
Sunday: a bigger day out
With a car, Sunday opens up. Old Wardour Castle is a romantic ruin a short drive away; the landscape gardens at Stourhead are among the finest in the country; and Longleat and Salisbury are both within easy reach. Pick one, take a leisurely lunch, and you have rounded off the weekend perfectly.
Where to base yourself
For this itinerary we love a country inn just outside town — you get the peace of the Blackmore Vale and a great dinner on the doorstep, while staying minutes from Shaftesbury itself. A few of our favourites are below, and you can compare every option on our where to stay page.
Travelling without a car? Shaftesbury is well served by buses from Gillingham railway station (about 10 minutes away), which has direct trains from London Waterloo, Salisbury and Exeter.
